Julia Müller builds up her images from complex layers, in which she superimposes screen printing with painted planes. Her work focuses on the commercial design of living spaces, standardized atmospheres, and the accompanying feeling of desolation. To this end, she collects patterns from home textiles, wallpapers, home catalogs, and product packaging. She is interested in how simple stripe combinations—varying in thickness and spacing—create specific moods, establish themselves as familiar visual codes, and ultimately reduce themselves to mere design formulas. She takes up these formulas to relate them to the problems of Abstract Painting. Through superimpositions, rotations, and changing directions, she sets lines in rhythmic motion. This creates picture surfaces in which different visual systems simultaneously meet and are transferred into new contexts, where their meaning is re-negotiated.
