Rei Zukidou
Rei Zukidou is a Japanese painter based in Berlin whose practice explores the intersection of physical and metaphysical planes. Born in Japan, she spent parts of her childhood in the UK and Belgium before returning to Japan; these experiences led her to adopt visual language as her primary means of communication. In 2019, she moved to Berlin to further develop her artistic practice.
In her abstract works, she focuses on fragmented rhythms and the present moment, using oil, acrylic, pencil, and found tools, and employing the body as an instinctive tool. Figurative works address violence, power, and suppressed voices, with exaggerated forms reflecting the tension between fragility and resilience. Through the interplay of abstraction and figuration, Zukidou develops a visual language that mediates between the visible and invisible, the personal and the universal.
